About us
Who we are
We are a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization founded in Mogadishu, in 2016
Our mission is to provide and strengthen democratization processes, improve government capacity and promote peace-building and effective governance, while integrating our values of respect, impartiality, quality, accountability, advocacy and innovation in all our work. In doing so, we provide people affected by human and natural crises in Somalia with emergency relief, sources of livelihood and food security. As preventive and sustainable measures, we focus on environmental protection and natural resources management, vocational educational programs and clean water. HOMDAS has a Somalia national geographic coverage with particular focus on underserved communities in Somalia.
Though the emphasis is on social and economic challenges in Somalia, our work is multidisciplinary and broad in scope. Our implementation programs are rigorous and objective. Regardless of the implementation sponsor, our work is free of ideological bias. Our work is peer-reviewed by experts inside and outside of HOMDAS. This scrutiny is part of what makes us a trusted source of expertise and analysis.
Somalia is confronted with institutional, security and climate change challenges as well as prolonged drought. The HOMDAS team believes there are opportunities to renew community social contracts and incentivize conflict-resolution to stabilize and support communities at local level as Federal and State institutions attempt to address legitimacy gaps. The HOMDAS Team
HOMDAS is governed by a board of three men and one woman. The Board comprises a nurse, a trained agronomist, and an independent development consultant. The executive consists of a long-time humanitarian practitioner with extensive training and experience in humanitarian and development interventions for vulnerable communities as well as a community liaison officer in charge of fundraising activities within the country and two backstopping staff. HOMDAS utilizes ad hoc community consultants (elders, women, civic actors, farmers, and pastoralists) to convey its message to communities and assist with the implementation of its projects. The liaison officer has extensive previous engagement with the Somali Red Crescent Society, while our senior staff have extensive training and background with development actors, and with business entities in Somalia and abroad.
